Information about our trips
Maligne lake is Jasper’s premier fishery. Fed by multiple glaciers, Maligne offers ever-changing views of snow-capped peaks. Aboard our electric-powered freighter canoes, we troll for rainbow trout in the 2-5 lbs range and brook trout up to 4 lbs. Maligne Lake holds the Alberta record for rainbow trout at 20 lb. 6 oz. (12 kg).
The lake is 14 miles long. We explore the first few miles on our ½ day trips, but also offer full days, and even extended trips beyond Samson Narrows.
Northern Pike, Canada’s favorite game fish, reigns supreme in Talbot Lake. Crystal clear water, a maximum depth of 7-8 feet make for exciting sight fishing for these aggressive predators. It is an excellent fishery for children or the novice fisherman. Spin fishing is the most common method, but we are also very happy to accommodate fly fishermen on the hunt for pike. Average size in Talbot is 2-6 lbs. The record fish from this lake came in at 27 lbs.
Jasper’s main river, the Athabasca, offers fishing for bull trout (protected species), rainbows, whitefish and pike. Best times are spring and fall, before and after the snow melt which makes the river too cloudy and swollen to fish effectively.
The upper Maligne River, located between Maligne and Medicine lakes is dedicated to the fly fisherman. This portion of the river, about 15 km long, (10 miles) provides lots of action on a dry fly or nymph on a dry line. This portion of the river is open from August 1st to Sept. 30 and it has lots of feisty small rainbow and brook trout.
All trips include Parks Canada licensed fishing guide, rainwear and all your tackle. Lunch is $20 on full day trips only. Boat and electric trolling motor use is included where applicable. There will be a charge of $50 for transportation fee.
